Buttock augmentation surgery enhances the buttock area by providing a more balanced, defined or shapelier contour to the body. There appears to be two different groups of patients seeking the procedure. One group of patients is younger and has goals of transforming their bodies into more curvaceous figures, like popular Hollywood stars such as Jennifer Lopez or Kim Kardashian. The other group of patients is older women who have lost volume in their buttocks and would like to restore a more youthful backside. Fat transfer is often used by itself or with buttock implants depending on how much volume is required and the individual shaping requirements.
If you are considering a buttock augmentation surgery, we want you to be thoroughly informed about the procedure. Below is some helpful information. A personal consultation with Dr. Newen is the best way to obtain the additional information you will need.
Am I a good candidate for buttock augmentation?
Buttock augmentation is ideal for patients who desire to either restore the volume loss in the buttocks due to aging, or who desire to have a shapelier contour to their body.
Your Personal Consultation
During the consultation you will be asked about the results you expect to achieve from buttock augmentation. This will help Dr. Newen understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved.
How will Dr. Newen evaluate me for buttock augmentation?
The size and shape of your buttocks, and the quality of the skin will be evaluated. Measurements and photos may be taken for your medical record. You should be prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, pregnancies, previous surgeries and medications that you currently take. It is important for to provide complete information.
How is a buttock augmentation performed?
Buttock augmentation can be done two ways. One is to place gluteal implants, however, these do not have a soft, natural feeling to it. It has a rather hard and muscular, “buns of steel” feel. This is the look that some patients desire. The immediate recovery restricts sitting until there is adequate healing. The second method is to do fat transfer, which involves harvesting fat from an unwanted area, and injecting it into the buttocks. Sometimes it is necessary to have more than one session for this procedure. Activities are allowed much faster than a buttock implant procedure.
Buttock implant surgery is more risky than fat transfer surgery and requires a lengthy recovery period. Since the incisions for the surgery is an area that is easily infected, potential complications can occur. Patients must understand that following buttock implants they will not be able to sit down for at least 14 days and will not be able to resume most normal activities for a month. More rigorous activities will not be able to be enjoyed for about two months after the buttock implants. Patient may be required to wear a compression garment offering support to the area. Still, for patients unhappy with their backside appearance, the growing availability of buttock implants has allowed them to achieve a more pleasing figure. Fat transfer is an alternative for many patients and allows for a rapid recovery. Dr. Newen will guide you in your decision and let you know which procedure is best to obtain your goals.
Understanding risks
Anyone considering surgery should be aware of both the benefits and risks. The subject of risks and potential complications of surgery is best discussed on a personal basis during your consultation with Dr. Newen. After surgery, there may be a temporary feeling of pain, swelling, and bruising. The types of symptoms experienced and the duration of the symptoms vary in patients.
Your surgical experience
Our goal is to make your surgical experience as easy and comfortable for you as possible. If you’re a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time before surgery. You will be provided with complete preoperative and postoperative instructions.
