Unwanted facial and body hair is a common problem that can be a source of distress for both men and women. Excessive hair growth can be due to medications, hormones, malnutrition, metabolic problems, or heredity. Many treatment options for managing unwanted hair have been available over the years, such as shaving and waxing, but these methods are temporary and offer varying degrees of success.
Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal works by permanently reducing the amount of hair that you have. You are good candidate for this procedure if you have any areas on your body where you would like the hair to be reduced, and if your hair is dark. Blonde, white, or red hair do not respond well with laser hair removal treatments. You must also be able to stay out of the sun and not be tanned during the course of your treatment.
Your personal consultation
During the consultation, you will be asked about the results you expect to achieve from laser hair removal. This will help us to understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved.
How will I be evaluated for laser hair removal?
Our nurse will examine the hair in the area that is to be treated to determine the appropriate dose for your hair and skin type. You should be prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, pregnancies, previous surgeries, and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.
How is laser hair removal performed?
Our nurse will use the Quanta Ultrawave laser to safely and effectively treat areas of unwanted hair with minimal discomfort. A cooling device will be used to reduce the discomfort from the laser light and also protect the top layer of skin from excessive heating and potential changes in pigmentation. The laser targets the melanin (dark) pigment present in the hair follicle shafts. Since hair grows in cycles, repeated treatments (at least 5-6) are necessary to obtain satisfactory results. Treatments are repeated every 4-6 weeks.
How do I prepare for my laser hair removal treatment?
Patients seeking laser hair removal are advised to avoid tanning or sunless tanners and to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen for up to six weeks prior to treatment. Please be sure to shave 2 days before your treatment. No waxing, threading, or plucking during the treatment course. You should avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher following the procedure.
Laser Hair Removal- How will I look and feel initially?
The most common side effects include discomfort, swelling, and redness that last one to three days. Other possible side effects, although rare, can include blistering, herpes simplex outbreaks, bacterial infections and temporary skin lightening or darkening. The percentage of hairs removed per session varies by location on the body, with thinner-skinned areas (e.g., armpits and bikini area) generally responding better than thick-skinned areas (e.g., back and chin). About 10 percent to 25 percent reduction in hair growth can be expected with each treatment. The hair that regrows following treatment tends to be lighter and finer in texture.
