Many patients develop what appears to be excess upper eyelid skin in their 30’s. Although this is sometimes the case, the culprit behind this upper eyelid excess skin is often sagging of the eyebrow and forehead. The ideal procedure to correct this is a forehead lift (also known as brow lift), which is performed through incisions behind the hairline. The forehead lift repositions the eyebrows at a higher level, which lifts the sagging skin above the upper eyelids, and opens and brightens up the eyes. This procedure can also help alleviate forehead and frown wrinkles.
If you are considering a forehead lift, we want you to be thoroughly informed about the procedure. Below is some helpful information. A personal consultation with Dr. Newen is the best way to obtain the additional information you will need.
Am I good candidate for a forehead lift?
The best candidate for a forehead lift are people who are looking for improvement in the amount of excess skin above their upper eyelids, and want their eyes to appear more open and brighter. Forehead wrinkles and frown lines can also be alleviated with the forehead lift.
Your personal consultation
During the consultation you will be asked about the results you expect to achieve from forehead lift. This will help Dr. Newen understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved.
How will Dr. Newen evaluate me for a forehead lift?
You should be prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries, any breathing problems you may have, and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.
How the forehead lift performed?
During the procedure, Dr Newen will make small incisions in the scalp behind the hairline to allow for direct visualization of the brow. The brows are then lifted and anchored to its new position and the incisions are closed.
Medications are administered for your comfort during the procedure. Generally, a forehead lift is done under general anesthesia, but can also be performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation. Dr. Newen will discuss which type of anesthetic will be best for you.
Understanding risks
Significant complications from the forehead lift are very rare. Dr. Newen has performed thousands of forehead lifts, and his patients generally do not experience any major problems and are pleased with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and risks.
The subject of risks and potential complications of surgery is best discussed on a personal basis during your consultation with Dr. Newen. After surgery, there may be a temporary feeling of numbness, pain, swelling, and bruising. The types of symptoms experienced and the duration of the symptoms vary in patients.
Your surgical experience
Our goal is to make your surgical experience as easy and comfortable for you as possible. If you’re a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time before surgery. You will be provided with complete preoperative and postoperative instructions. Most patients take approximately 10 days off of work to recover.
The forehead lift is performed at Huntington Surgery Center, our outpatient surgery facility located within The Image Center. Please be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure and stay with you for at least 24 hours.
